They don't grow
these in Kansas either. I don't think I've ever seen one of
these before I came to the Pacific Northwest. The red paper
bark offers some spectacular color, especially as the sun is
going down. What you can't see here is the waterfront just
beyond the trees.
You could enjoy
this scene on a drive through the backroads to Coupeville,
WA on your way to Penn Cove.

I'm not sure exactly how tall
this tree is. The Evergreen's next to it are tall trees...
maybe 100 feet. I was standing on a hill behind it when I
took this shot, so there's more that wouldn't fit into this
picture.
