Tips
for Riding the Ferry...
Cardinal Rule # 1:
Do not cut into the ferry lane
As you approach the ferry
landing, you will see signs that direct you into the ferry
lanes. Cutting in front of other cars in this lane can cost
you a $500 traffic violation. Commuters are very conscious of
this rule and will keep you honest. If someone believes you
have cut them off, they may suggest you return to the end of
the line, which could delay your passage.
Now to the more
pleasant aspects...
The ferries run every 30
minutes on the hour and at the half-hour during the day and
into the early evening. Depending upon the season, at 9:00
p.m. they start hourly runs (on the hour at Mukilteo, going
over, and on the half-hour in Clinton, coming back).
If you must wait for a ride,
there is plenty to do right there at the landing. Get an
espresso drink, some fish or clam chowder, ice cream or just
take a quick stroll on the dock. The concessionaires will help
you keep track of the time.
Save a few french fries to feed
the gulls on the ride over. They will compete heavily
for the opportunity of a handout. I don't think I will ever
tire of doing this, but then, we don't get to see many sea
gulls in Kansas.
The seating area on the second
level provides a beautiful view of the ride as well. There's a
coffee shop available with snacks and restrooms available
there, as well. Smoking is allowed on the aft upper deck, but
only after departure is underway. To see more pictures, visit
the WA
State Ferries site.
